Science Communication Center (SCC) initiative

Our IGERT included a university sponsored Science Communication Center (SCC) initiative with the goal of connecting science students with faculty from the College of Communications. This year, the SCC offered two well received workshops. The first focused on poster development and presentation, emphasizing message focusing, redundant text reduction, and the accompanying verbal pitch. The second was about improving journal article writing and emphasized the use of active voice, denominalization, and power slotting key concepts. In addition to these activities, the SCC budgets time for one to one meetings with students to aid in preparation of any communication-related tasks and have mentored students on abstracts, predoctoral fellowship proposals, and posters. SCC faculty also participated in the grant writing course offered by the Genome Science and Technology program to provide insight from the prospective of professional communicators.
