Carbon flux phenology transitions

Research conducted by three current and former BART trainees was recently submitted for publication to Agriculture and Forest Meteorology. This work represents a collaborative effort involving different BART cohorts, universities, and disciplines. Steve Garrity (remote sensing and ecosystem productivity), Kyle Maurer (effects of tree-scale structural heterogeneity on flux exchanges and atmospheric surface layer properties), and Kim Mueller (inverse carbon cycle modeling) compared measurements from several phenology data sources to understand the relationship between phenology metrics derived from these data sources and seasonal transitions in net ecosystem exchange. They conclude that no single data source is adequate to describe the full suite of carbon flux phenology transitions, but combinations of metrics from different data sources can be used to better estimate the timing of phenology events.
