Achievement

Scott Fulbright (second cohort, Cell & Molecular Biology) was awarded a NSF GRF Fellowship for his project, "Monitoring community dynamics in algae production systems." Scott's work focuses on the use of algae as a biofuel source. He will identify and categorize bacterial communities growing in algal cultures, measure the influence of the bacteria, and optimize bacteria-algae interactions for optimal lipid production conditions. The project is multidisciplinary, including metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. A strong collaborative effort powers this project. The team interacting with Scott includes CSU assistant professor Dr. Stephen Chisholm, Solix Biofuels, DOE's NAABB, and Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), allowing Scott to draw upon a range of expertise. Because of Scott's MASB connections, he was able to secure an internship at QIBEBT that set the entire project plan in motion.
