Paper receives Young Researcher Certificate of Excellence

Michael Richard’s milestones were completion of the Ph.D. proposal defense, preparation & execution of the Brazilian research rotation, and continuation of the research program on bamboo standardization and use in construction. The paper “Experimental Buckling Capacity of Multiple Culm Bamboo Columns” was presented at the 13th International Conference on Non-conventional Materials and Technologies in Changsha, China, September 2011, and was awarded a 2011 Young Researcher Certificate of Excellence for an outstanding scientific paper by a young researcher. Fall 2011 focused on preparation of a successful Ph.D. Proposal Defense. In spring 2012, an experimental research program on bamboo test methods is being conducted at PUC-Rio under the advisement of Dr. Ghavami for six months. A publication entitled “Structural Use of Full Culm Bamboo: The Path to Standardisation” was accepted by the International Journal of Architecture, Engineering and Construction.
