In Fall 2011, Co-PIs Rashid Bashir and Taher Saif co-taught "BioNanotechnology and Nanomedicine: Applications in Cancer and Mechanobiology" with faculty from Liberal Arts and Sciences. There were four main sections of the course: (a) introduction to nanotechnology and nanomedicine (b) biological concepts and cancer biology (c) applications in cancer, and (d) applications in cellular mechanics. Students at the University of Illinois from the following departments enrolled: Ag & Biological Engr, Biochem, Bioengineering, Chemical Engr, Chemistry, Electrical & Computer Engr, Materials Science & Engr, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Mechanical Science & Engr. Two students from the Dept of Biological Engr and Small-scale Technologies in the School of Engr at UC Merced participated via video conference. Evaluation findings were positive, additional components will be added to enhance the interdisciplinary aspects of the course when offered in Fall 2012.
