Introducing students to interdisciplinary research and education

In Fall 2011, Co-PIs Rashid Bashir, Martha Gillette, Jimmy Hsia, and Taher Saif, co-taught Mechanical Engineering 199 (ME 199): Interdisciplinary Research and Education in Biology, Engineering, and Health Science. The course objectives were to produce the next generation of leaders who will work at the intersection of biology, engineering, and health science. This requires a highly interdisciplinary environment which educates and empowers students to take leadership roles and address global cross-disciplinary challenges in our changed world. ME 199 introduced 11 freshman (class composition: 6 females and 5 males - 3 Asian/Pacific Islanders, 3 African Americans, 3 Hispanics, and 2 White) to interdisciplinary education, research programs, and career opportunities.
