Multiscale methods for fluids in porous media

Multiscale modeling, for example microscopic treatment of specific domains coupled to averaging of large regions, can provide tremendous gain in computational ability. This is an over-arching theme of our project, and a focus of the Inst. for Scientific Computing (Efendiev, director). A large effort is directed toward multiscale methods for fluids in porous media (Efendiev, Kuchment, Daripa, Bangerth; trainees Brown, Protasov, Weyand, and a number of industrial collaborators). In one development, Brown worked with Efendiev to develop a model utilizing homogenization techniques allowing pore deformations for more realistic treatment of flow problems, such as for groundwater or oil extraction. Brown defended his dissertation based on this work, and had two publications accepted. He was awarded the Guseman prize for Math scholarship and service, and accepted a post-doc at KAUST (Saudi Arabia) involving continued industrial collaboration for geo-related problems.
