IGERT classes provide tools for interdisciplinary research

Our IGERT core classes are successful in providing tools for interdisciplinary research. IGERT faculty are using a range of pedagogical techniques and topics to introduce students to integrative ways of thinking about marine-ecosystem-based issues. Techniques include case studies, team-teaching, guest speakers, interactive problem-solving, and personal histories to introduce and model real-life examples of interdisciplinarity. Faculty members also share their own experiences working in interdisciplinary settings (e.g., the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council, the Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program). Students report, “I think the classes are the most successful aspect. They really force you to think interdisciplinarily with marine research.” “The program gives us the tools that we need to do interdisciplinary research. The classes that we've had and will have are focused to give us the knowledge we need to succeed in this type of research.”
