Students form startup and receive business awards

Mechanical engineering student Casey Hoffman has partnered with a non-IGERT graduate student at RPI to form a company focused on manufacturing of advanced composite materials. These highly customizable materials are frequently used in a range of critically important applications from aircraft to windmill blades to biomedical devices. They have developed a patent-pending process, which is faster and cheaper than the current industry standard methods, and are looking to leverage this technology in their startup. In the past year their efforts have won them first place in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Elevator Pitch Competition, and they were selected as finalists in the 2011 New York State Business Plan Competition. They have also been selected as finalists in the upcoming 2012 NY state business plan competition.
