Spatial orientation and navigation for people without vision

Julio Mateo, Lwd IGERT Fellow, has completed a naturalistic field study to learn how people without vision are able to orient themselves and navigate through the world. Data collection was accomplished through a collaboration with Edward Bell at the Research Institute on Blindness at Louisiana Tech University. Julio was able to interview trainers and students associated with the Orientation and Mobility Courses at the Research Institute on Blindness. Data analysis is complete and Julio is in the final stages of writing his dissertation. The dissertation will document the heuristics that allow people without sight to achieve independence with respect to spatial orientation and navigation.
