IGERT trainee Micah Frerck has received considerable state and national recognition during the last 12 months for his work with nanoengineered medical coatings capable of alleviating surgical camera fogging and occlusion during minimally invasive surgery. Micah and his team were awarded an Engine Grant from the University of Utah Technology Commercialization Office, providing them with $2,500 to develop a manufacturing plan by the end of the summer 2013. The team received second place in TechTitans, the first of three competitions in the Utah Entrepreneur Series, focusing on the idea stage of creating a business. Micah’s team were also finalists in Opportunity Quest, the second competition in the Utah Entrepreneur Series, addressing the executive summary stage in business development. Micah and his team received the award for “best presentation” at the Opportunity Quest as well. In addition, Micah and his team were finalists in the Grow America Springboard Competition.
