Fourier-transform spectrometer operating in the near-infrared range

Through computer simulation and modeling, Valerie Finnemeyer developed a Fourier-transform spectrometer operating in the near-infrared range, which is composed of fixed and variable birefringent elements and achromatic liquid crystal polarization rotators. Previous researchers have proposed similar device designs but have been unable to solve the problem of limited field-of-view (the small angle of acceptance for their device makes it unusable at high resolutions). We have proposed modifications and demonstrated the field-of-view improvement of this design, which allows high-resolution scanning with high field-of-view. This device has no moving parts so it can be portable and compact, beneficial in biological applications. Results will be presented at the SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing Conference, which is being held April 2013. We are also working with ChemImage of Pittsburgh, PA as part of the Ohio Third Frontier program to patent and develop this technology into marketplace.
