Trainee partners with LANL on wind power

One IGERT trainee, Daniel Curtis Saunders (Curtis), has developed a partnership with scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) working in the area of wind power. Curtis' research involves modeling turbine interaction on wind farms and using these models to develop improved control algorithms to minimize effects of wind farm intermittency on the electric grids. Curtis will use the WindBlade code developed at LANL to simulate wake dynamics of wind turbines in a farm. Curtis visited LANL for a two-week period during January 2013 to meet with the LANL scientists and begin learning the WindBlade code, and he will be returning there this summer to further his training in this area.
