UC Davis hosts Dr. Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella

On April 16, 2009 the UC Davis Storer Lecture Series hosted Dr. Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella, director of the Laboratorio Nacional de Genómica para la Biodiversidad (National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity) from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN in Irapuato, México. He helped develop many of the tools and markers used to generate transgenic plants and is a leader in the field of plant biotechnology. Following the lecture, CREATE-IGERT trainees Elenor Castillo and Timothy Butterfield, along with Co-PI M. Newell-McGloughlin, Program Coordinator D. Jamison-McClung and a small group of UC Davis academics, were invited to dine with the speaker and discuss current issues in ag biotech. Dinner and discussion provided a unique educational experience for the trainees, interacting personally with an international "thought leader" on ag biotech.
